Installing the new lock therefore required more than attaching a keypad: the door preparation had to be evaluated, the unused openings covered, and the new locking hardware positioned so the latch, handle, and strike would operate together.

Why a Mortise-to-Keyless Conversion Requires Planning
Mortise locks use a large pocket inside the door and often have a long exterior trim plate. Once that hardware is removed, the remaining cutouts may be wider or positioned differently from the holes used by cylindrical locks and many keypad products. Cover or conversion plates can provide a clean mounting surface, but their dimensions, fastener locations, and relationship to the door edge must be checked before installation.
The new hardware also has to align with the existing strike and the inactive door. A keypad that appears correctly mounted may still bind if the door pair, latch, or strike is out of alignment. For this reason, we check operation from both sides and confirm that the door closes and locks without excessive force.
